古代メソポタミアの神殿址からは、神々ではなく祈りのポーズをとる人物像が多く発見されています。自分をモデルにした人形を神殿に置いて、自分の代わりにいつも祈ってもらっていたのかもしれません。この女性像は目の部分がありませんが、貝やラピスラズリなどで瞳が表現されている例が知られています。底部には彫り込みがあり、中にピッチのようなものが残っています。像を固定するために使われたのでしょう。

Sumerian stone statues discovered so far mostly are representations of priests and worshipers, rather than gods and goddesses. This is a female figure whose eyes were originally emphasized by colored inlay of shell and lapis lazuli. She wears a long woolen robe woven with a pattern resembling overlapping petals.
