古代メソポタミアの神殿には、祈りのポーズをとる人物像がたくさん置かれていたと考えられています。自分をモデルにした人形を神殿に置いて、自分の代わりにいつも祈ってもらっていたのかもしれません。この像はカウナケスと呼ばれる独特の衣装を身につけています。シュメール初期王朝時代３期によく見られる衣装の表現です。

Each Sumerian city-state had its own deity worshiped in a temple, the central structure of the walled city. Votive statues like this one were placed in the temple so that they could constantly be offering prayers on behalf of the donors they represented. This male figure is wearing kaunakes (Greek meaning “thick cloak”) characteristic of examples dating from the third early dynastic period, mid-3rd millennium BCE.
